In 1927 members of Cumann na mBan created and hand-made badges which featured the Arum or Easter Lily. Their objective was to honour Ireland's Patriot Dead and raise money for the Republican Prisoners’ Dependents Fund,
The Lily was chosen as a symbol for two reasons; in the first place it was already an international flower of Requiem, while on the other hand the flower shared the same colours as the Irish National Flag, the Tricolour.
